Legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta has died. He was 82.
Close friends and family announced his passing but details of his death were not immediately revealed. It is suspected that he passed away after a longtime battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 but as of last year, he was reportedly free of it.
de la Renta was born July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic and was the only son of seven children. At 18, he left his home to study art at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He told an audience at New York’s 92Y “Fashion Talks” series in June 2013:
“My father had different aspirations for me than I had for myself. If I ever told my father I would become a fashion designer, he would drop dead on the spot.”
Throughout de la Renta’s career, he dressed A-list celebrities, first ladies and famous brides. Most recently, he dressed George Clooney’s wife, Amal Alamuddin.
